
Israel was built on scarcity. Lacking water, arable land, energy. Each constraint was a nation-defining problem to be solved. Drip irrigation, desalination, dairy yields on marginal land, a grid engineered to withstand extreme insecurity. These were not nice to haves, these were responses to physical limitations that threatened Israel’s existence.Â
Western powers are in an AI led capex cycle defined by physical bottlenecks. Energy systems, supply chains and physical infrastructure were already under immense strain, prior to the AI led demand inflection. These problems require exactly the kind of ingenuity Israel has spent decades building: deep technical talent applied to constrained physical systems.Â
The scale and urgency of this AI infrastructure build out is pulling through technologies that will have generational implications, including advanced nuclear, geothermal and grid hardware. Most of what gets built will outlast the cycle that paid for it, leaving cheaper, cleaner energy and industrial capacity beyond the data centers that triggered them.

Israel leads the world on R&D spend as a % of GDP at 6.3%. This partially translates into a robust deep tech ecosystem; around 1,500 companies strong, having raised $28.6bn since 2019. What the figures don't capture is the density. Talent, capital, and industry sit close enough together that learning compounds quickly, and the instinct to collaborate is strong.
I saw this firsthand on the 2025 PLANETech delegation. What struck me most was the vitality of an ecosystem focused on solving existential planetary challenges beyond its doorstep and an unrelenting desire to engage with the outside world rather than turn inward. That is not a given. It is a cultural choice that makes engaging with the ecosystem well worth the effort.
My conviction has its caveats. Technical strength is now table stakes. Incremental improvements won't carry a company across borders or through multiple funding cycles. What matters more is speed to market, commercial validation, distribution and business model leverage, and durable competitive moats.
The ecosystem's biggest structural disadvantage is distance from large markets and customers. Proximity tells you something that is hard to read from a distance: the shape and maturity of your target market. Whether a vertically integrated or pick-and-shovel approach makes sense; it defines the early wedge; the evolving roadmap.
Delegations and events like PLANETech Week are how that distance gets closed, in both directions: founders get earlier access to offshore markets, and outside investors gain early access to world-class teams.
Today's major constraints are physical, and the risks of failing to adapt are existential. The scarcity Israel was built on is now a global condition, and few places are better equipped to meet it.
